One area in the development of librarianship that needs attention is that of school libraries. School libraries in the Southeast Asian countries are at various stages of development; some countries have well-established and managed school libraries, others have very basic only. With the establishment of the ASEAN Community 2015 (AC15) and many other developments in the region, it is important that school libraries be given attention, for they represent the base for the development of an information literate citizenry.

With this in mind, the Department of Library & Information Science, Srinakharinwirot University, Bangkok, the Thai School Library Committee of the Thai Library Association, and the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) will be organizing a 1-day Workshop on the Development of School Libraries in the ASEAN Countries in Bangkok as a pre-conference activity preceding the CONSAL XVI meeting.
